Centre Street to 1 Street S.W. (full road closure) – This week crews started setting up temporary water at buildings in this block in preparation of upcoming utility work. Crews have also removed the asphalt on this block in advance of underground utility work beginning next week.

17th Avenue Business Owner Testimonial
As a business owner of a restaurant that is directly affected by the current construction on 17 Avenue, I would like to take this opportunity to commend (The City) team.

While dealing with construction and road closures is never ideal, the teams at both Highline and Volker Stevin (City of Calgary contractors) have been excellent at trying to keep the negative impacts to a minimum. Highline needed to limit access to by business for one day, but met with me beforehand to figure out the best day and time for my business. Their ongoing communication of what has been done and what the next steps are, has been great for my peace of mind. Volker Stevin has been diligent at maintaining access to my restaurant.”

1 Street SW Improvements
Construction on the 1 Street SW Corridor Improvement project has now begun with anticipated completion by Fall 2017.

This project will improve the streetscape for pedestrians and transit riders by providing wider sidewalks, more prominent crosswalks, upgraded LED pedestrian and street lighting, additional bike racks, increased number of on-street parking spaces and new tree plantings. The design builds on the existing character of the blocks located between 12 and 14 Avenues, extending the streetscape design along the full length of the corridor – from the CPR underpass to 17th Avenue.

The improvements will be completed in stages in a way that minimizes impacts to businesses, residents, pedestrians, and motorists.

You can find more information on this project at

Building Safety During Construction
The project team would like to remind everyone with a property or business along 17 Avenue S. to review their emergency access routes to ensure safe, easy access to muster points during construction. Crews will do everything they can to ensure safe access to sidewalks throughout construction.

Pocket Plaza Approved
You may have heard that City Council approved an application to develop a pocket plaza on 5A Street and 17 Avenue S.W.

The 17th Avenue Pocket Plaza project is a community-led initiative to reclaim an under-used space as a public place along one of Calgary’s main streets at the corner of 5A Street and 17 Avenue S.W.

The 17 Avenue S. construction team supports this revitalization of a public space and will be working with The City’s Urban Strategy division to coordinate construction of the plaza.

Business Support
To help support businesses through construction, we’re developed a marketing campaign, which began April 17:

  • Advertisements at the Victoria Park/Stampede station
  • Radio ads on five major radio stations and our partnership with X92.9
  • Geo-targeted online ads
  • Promotion through The City’s social media channels
  • Specialized wayfinding construction hoarding around work zones

Resources for business owners including updated project posters, postcards, and website banner will be available soon. More information will be available as the marketing plan develops further.

What to expect during 2017 and 2018 construction
In general, each block will see some of the same kind of construction work and impacts:

  • Temporarily remove on-street parking
  • A full closure (no traffic) or partial closure (one eastbound and one westbound lane remain open)
  • Ongoing heavy construction between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily (information on daily schedules will be available closer to April)
  • Sidewalks and pedestrian accesses will remain open to businesses along 17 Ave SW
  • Reopen traffic lanes and on-street parking once the road work phase is complete

As the contractor developed and refines their 2017 work schedule, more information will be available for each block. Find out when your block will be under construction on the 2017-2018 construction schedule.

17th Ave Project Vision

After thirty years, we’re reconstructing 17 Avenue S.W. and our plans are going to make it awesome for all of us, for decades to come. The construction will be between Macleod Trail S.E. and 14 Street S.W. to improve sidewalks, road design, and underground utilities.

17th Ave is one of Calgary’s most vibrant neighbourhoods to shop, eat, visit and do business.
